AEROSPACE

Crystal Structures of Metals

This interaction was developed for an Introduction to Aeroengine Alloys module, which aimed to educate students on the metallurgy of alloys used in aeroengines.

The module was developed for a client in the aerospace industry, whilst working for an engineering training organisation. It was part of a suite of custom modules, developed to tailor one of our existing courses to the client's specific sector requirements.

Before focusing on specific aeroengine alloys, students needed to understand the basic crystal structure of metals. It was proposed to develop an interaction whereby the user could select each crystal structure type and be presented with a 'fact sheet' outlining its key features. The student could then also interact with a 3D model of the crystal structure to examine its composition.
